Council tax

You may qualify for help with your Council Tax through Council Tax Benefit.

You should enter the actual Council Tax bill you are meant to pay, excluding any help you currently receive through Council Tax Benefit but including any reduction for disabilities, reduction for disregarded people (see below) or single person’s discount (if only one person lives in a property they qualify for a 25% discount on their Council Tax bill: if you qualify for this please enter the amount due after the 25% discount).

For instance, take someone living alone where the full Council Tax for their property is £20 per week but who receives a 25% single person’s discount, worth £5 per week, and Council Tax Benefit on top of this worth £4 per week. In this case they should enter £15 per week into the calculator as their Council Tax (£20 per week minus single person’s discount of £5 per week). You can then use the calculator to check the Council Tax Benefit of £4 per week and to see how it would change under different circumstances.

Do not include any water charges or water rates in the amount you enter. Council Tax Benefit can not help with water charges or water rates.

When working out how many people live in a property, some people are not counted. These are called disregarded people. If everyone who lives in the property is disregarded, there will still be a Council Tax bill but there will be a 50% discount. More information is available on people who are disregarded

If you are eligible for Pension Credit (guarantee credit), Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or income-based Jobseeker's Allowance you qualify for maximum help with your Council Tax. But you can still qualify for some help from your local council even if you do not get these benefits.
