Groups not included in the calculator

The Benefits Checker does not work out eligibility to benefits for some groups of people because special rules apply and the estimates may not be correct.

Groups not included are:

  • Students
  • People aged under 18
  • People who are permanently in residential care, a nursing home or hospital.
  • Prisoners
  • People on strike
  • People who are not British or Irish citizens
  • UK nationals who live abroad.

Please also read the following notes:

People aged under 18
The checker does not cover under 18 year olds (the question in the checker taking your age will indicate this). Single people aged under 18 and couples where both partners are aged under 18 should not use the checker, as special rules apply because of their age.

If you are under 18 but your partner is older than 18, then you can still use the checker to calculate Housing Benefit,Council Tax Benefit and tax credits. In this case, enter that the younger partner is aged 18. Note though that the result may not be accurate for other benefits where different rates of benefit may apply if you have a partner aged under 18. For more information see benefit rules about age.

In hospital/residential care
If you, your partner or one of your children live in a residential care home or are in hospital, we cannot estimate your entitlement. For more information see living in a residential care home or hospital.

Not a British or Irish citizen
Entitlement to benefits and tax credits is limited for people subject to immigration control. If you are not a British or Irish citizen, or your partner is not an European Economic Area (EEA) national, you should not use the checker.

The checker cannot determine your immigration status, which affects your entitlement to benefits and tax credits.

For more information see not a British or Irish citizen and Benefits for people who are migrants (economic or refugee)

UK nationals living abroad

If you are a UK national who lives abroad you should also not use the checker.

If you fall into one of the groups that are not included on the checker, you can use the Find an Adviser tool on the Turn2us website to find a local adviser who can advise you further on your particular circumstances.
